Tracing the history of movie theaters in central Yamaguchi
This exhibition traces back the history of movie theaters in Yamaguchi City, based on the memories of local residents and historical records.
In the late 1940s and ‘50s, there were more than ten movie theaters in Yamaguchi. The exhibition reexamines the history of the theaters that once existed in the city, along with the things that disappeared with them, and those that have been carried over to the present. Featured next to a documentary movie in which the artist Nobuhiro Shimura unravels the local people’s memories related to the movie theaters, are various historical records and other related materials, as well as precious photos and film footage from back in the day. Also offered during the exhibition period are screenings of movies with some connection or other to Yamaguchi, and a workshop themed on the history of cinema.
