The maze of memory above and below the ground

Large-scale sound installation combining waste materials and light

Five mirror devices that can be moved in any direction via a computer are installed in the center of the venue, from where they reflect light showering from the ceiling across the entire space. At the same time, more than 500 objects and pieces of waste material collected at various places in the city, as well as 70 speakers are suspended from the ceiling. Audible from these speakers are various sounds synchronized with the moving rays of light from the mirror devices. These sounds are taken from recordings of improvised performances by a total of more than 100 musicians ranging from professionals to local amateurs, based on a predetermined score. Lights, sounds, objects and waste materials resonate to form a mixed orchestra that stimulates the visitor's memory.
In addition, a gallery type installation made up of vast amounts of disused musical instruments and vinyl records is displayed in the basement under the main installation.

Profiles

OTOMO Yoshihide

Musician

Born 1959 in Yokohama. Has been attracting a lot of attention around the globe with his endeavors across genres and styles, from experimental music to jazz and pop, while also being renowned for his musical contributions in the realms of cinema, TV and theater. In recent years, his focus has been on musical works and sound installations, as well as collaborations with various artists and regular citizens under the name “Ensembles,” presented in a rather unique concert style. At the same time, he continues to engage in a range of participatory projects. After the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, he launched a project in the Fukushima area, where he spent his teens, and in 2012, received a Ministry of Education's Award for Fine Arts for his work on the “Project FUKUSHIMA!” His numerous other awards include a Japan Record Award for the score for the TV program “Amachan” in 2013. Since 2014, Otomo has been devoting himself to Ensembles Asia, launched as a vehicle for establishing a network across Asia through music. He was the artistic director of the Sapporo International Art Festival 2017, and in 2019, director of the reorganized Waraji Matsuri, a popular local festival in Fukushima.

Tadasu TAKAMINE

Contemporary Artist / Theater Director

Born in Kagoshima in 1968 and lives in Akita. Graduated from the lacquer work department of Kyoto City University of Arts and Music, and the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Science (IAMAS) in Gifu. Much of Takamine’s work awakens a feeling of non-verbal compassion and sympathy in the viewer through installations, media art techniques, and performances that emphasize the bi-directional relationship between a work and its audience. His practice also deals with issues related to American imperialism, the sexuality of handicapped persons, and issues facing foreign residents in Japan, highlighting the complex relationships between authority and subject, those implicated within a particular situation, and those who are not, often prompting the viewer towards a process of self-questioning. His works have been highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. Takamine participated in the Venice Biennale in 2003, and his solo show “Too Far to See” toured three Japanese museums between 2011 and 2012. He is also the author of “A Lover from Korea” (Kawade Shobo Shinsha,2008), a novel that examines issues related to identity and nationalism through his own personal relationship with an ethnic Korean woman resident in Japan, and an incident that took place at a manganese mine in Kyoto, where Takamine wrote the work."
