TAYLOR DEUPREE + CHRISTOPHER WILLITS "LISTENING GARDEN" CD release
"LISTENING GARDEN," a collaborative CD between Taylor Deupree, who presides over 12K label in New York, and Christopher Willits, who recently issued a new album from Ghostly International, has been released from Line label affiliated to 12K.[Catalog ID: LINE 032CD]
This CD is based on the YCAM-commissioned installation exhibited to the public in the courtyards A and B, June 26 through September 30, 2004. As the open-air courtyards of YCAM structurally provide a space where natural sounds such as rain are audible, a special sound system was designed so as to let the sound come up from underground, and their ambient sound was produced in consideration of the spatial feature. Thus, this work has become a topic of conversation.
In this CD based on the installation, sounds that actually flow in the space and the field-recorded sound source such as the audience's voices and natural sounds like rain are used for its unique finishing. (YCAM InterLab has cooperated with the artists for the design of 5.1 channel sound-system and recording.)
The Concept
"LISTENING GARDEN" is a new sound-related attempt for two quiet cafe spaces, indoor and outdoor. While looking at trees in the courtyard, and enjoying conversations at the cafe, visitor's sense of hearing becomes keener as the 5.1 channel audio system produces sounds. Listening Garden that has nothing to do with a complex message or concept, is a work to provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the pleasure of sitting at this place at this moment. This CD successfully fuse the areas of guitar music and electronics through some short, random sequences in order to create a bridge between the world of digital sounds and the sound sphere of nature, while paying attention to the unobtrusive environment that has been exposed to weather and eroded.
The sound installation of the work that was exhibited in the courtyards in 2004 is open to the public again along with the sale of this CD.
