Hands-on studies of contemporary "media" from everyday perspectives. Discover new values that add color to your daily routine

YCAM organizes a variety of programs designed to guide visitors who may not have experience, but are inquisitive and wish to know more about new forms of artistic expression using media technology. The aim is to help visitors enjoy the shows and displays at the Center, and to broaden their understanding of art and technology. This year's lecture series, The media kitchen, connects the broad field of "media art" - a central theme of our work at YCAM - with everyday life.

Volume two in the YCAM media kitchen lecture series:
Re-evaluating contemporary connections between clothing and technology.

Following the success of the first Media Kitchen focused on food and technology, our second installment is about clothing. The lecturer, Danielle Wilde, has been exploring body-worn and wearable technologies for more than a decade, in different parts of the world. The focus of her work is to discover how technology might be paired with the body to create enjoyable and meaningful ways to engage our bodies and thereby transform our lives.
Since the dawn of history, technology has been making life more comfortable. Yet it seems at times that the same technology that is meant to make us feel good, actually takes us further and further from our feelings and sensations. In her lecture, Ms Wilde will propose that if people reflect on what they dream of, rather than what they know is possible, it can help technologists invent novel technologies that empower us, and transform the way we work, live and play. She will begin by introducing different aspects of wearable technologies, soft electronics and textile technologies - to help the participants understand the current state of play. Then she will guide them through the OWL project, an international project that asks people from all walks of life what they dream of, and helps them to think about how technology on their bodies might make this dream possible. The lecture will serve as an occasion to re-evaluate what we take for granted in relation to technology and the body, and also to imagine how future technologies might turn everybody's everyday into something completely new.

what is "YCAM media kitchen" ?
Against the backdrop of increasingly diversified media, and the transformations they bring to society and communication, it becomes more and more important for people to explore ways of making creative use of technologies and tools. For this to be possible, we need a deep understanding of how technologies work. YCAM Media Kitchen proposes a new lecture format that approaches media from common, everyday topics, to convey knowledge through practical experience. With subjects such as food, clothing and living environments as their departure point, each lecture, by a distinguished artists and/or specialized professional will stimulate your curiosity. The lecturers will discuss media technology as an extension of daily life, and highlight how computerisation has become a hidden part of the everyday. These events will be occasions to develop new understandings of how to apply and use information necessary for life in an increasingly technologised world, from the unique perspectives of experts in these fields. Even for visitors less familiar with the term "media", the discussions, based on everyday experiences such as dressing, eating and living will provide a useful introduction, as well as unique perspectives on everyday technologies and tools. The dishes prepared in this kitchen range from new ideas to new media. Their aim is to connect visitora with YCAM by introducing new values that can add color to your daily routine.
